Functional Capacity Evaluation

What is a Functional Capacity Evaluation?

A Functional Capacity Evaluation is a comprehensive, systematic evaluation consisting of objective testing of an individual's abilities to perform work related tasks (one day or multi-day).

Objective testing and skilled observation measure factors such as work aptitudes, strength, flexibility, motor skills, perception, activity tolerance, work behaviors, ability to remember and follow directions. Specific activities can be structured to allow for observation of the client in simulated work, leisure or home tasks.

These factors are analyzed to determine functional capacities.

What can be determined by an FCE?

  • Your client's ability to meet the physical demands of the current/pre-accident job title in objective, measurable terms;
  • The level of employability post-injury, i.e. competitively employable, employable, or non-employable;
  • The need for job modification, accommodation, or adaptation;
  • Readiness for work, including identification of specific limiting factors and barriers for employment;
  • The suitability of the individual's abilities with the proposed or existing job demands;
  • The need for workplace modifications to promote successful return to work and reduce the risk of re-injury;
  • Where appropriate treatment recommendations to facilitate optimum recovery.
